We all know we should do it, but what does grooming really do for your dog besides from making them look pretty?
A clean pet is a happy pet! No hair in the eyes, clean fur, skin, clipped nails and clean teeth all make a dog more comfortable and better behaved. When we choose not to groom our dog/s there could be serious side effects and could encourage a variety of issues. These could lead to expensive vet bills or even aggressive behaviour.
Long hair is the culprit of a variety of discomfort and skin issues. Hair hanging around the eyes can restrict vision altering their capabilities and behaviour. When long hair is not brushed and washed regularly matting can occur and can load them with extra weight.
Matting of the hair can be painful and cause many skin conditions. Severe matting restricts blood flow, pulling tightly on their skin and making a simple movement painful. In some cases matting can be so severe that it restricts body movement leading to deformity.
Overgrown nails can be painful, with long nails growing into the paw pads and causing infection. Long nails can cause their toes to bend and create walking disfigurement.
Fleas, ticks and mites are some of the most common parasites that can be fatal and they thrive on dirty untreated bodies.
All of these issues can affect their mental wellbeing, due to discomfort and pain they may cause. By tending to their needs on a regular basis you can optimise their physical and mental health.
